51 Photos - Animal

OK, as I was told that I had a cat already, I chose this animal:
a glittery bug enjoying the flowers in my sister's garden!

Oh - I just have to add the cat I saw in Piran, in the back of a truck anyway :-) - cats win!

PPPD - Teapot

The next motive on Terry's  Pen, Pencil, Paper - Draw blog was teapot. I could not find my glass teapot so I chose an old coffepot from my grandma. The filter part was broken ages ago (it is a so called "Karlsbader Kaffeekanne"), but I love to use it for fruit tea in summer. This time I remembered to take a photo while drawing and as I realized once finished, I not only made a mistake with the top, but also missdrew the curve on the left side of the pot. I think I will try it again tonight before drawing flowers.

Some weeks ago I had the chance to got to Piran, Slovenia, with a painting group from Styria. As I had forgotten my passport, which I luckily discovered just 1,5 hrs. into a 5,5 hr. drive, I arrived when everybody else had been working for some time already. To "arrive" and get my brain into art mode I started out with a pen sketch, which I worked on with my waterbrush to add some shading.
To get out of my tiny sketching in my travel skechtbook I turned to watercolor pencils.
When shoping for supplies I had to get some indian ink in differnt colors - fun!
Another building on Tartini place caught my eyes, again indian ink but this time combined with watercolor.

A final wc pencil sketch in my sketchbook was the end of a short but intensive afternoon.

PPPD - Shoe

The first exercise fulfilled. While listening to the History Channel I drew my new walking sandal using my wc pencils as they were still on my desk since my return from Piran. I know the difficulty of drawing something from memory, so I put the sandal in front of me and drew it as I saw it.
The photo I took today is not from the same angle as the coffee table it was sitting on is a bit lower than the couch I was sitting on but the result is not so bad. I could have done a lot more with shading (instead of the color) but I enjoyed using the red/black pencils as much as I love my red sandals.

Next time I'll take a photo of the object I'm drawing while drawing, so to be better able to judge the result.

Pen, Pencil, Paper - Draw!

I discovered a new blog today. When looking through the quilt blogs I follow, I discovered that Terry Grant has started a new blog called: Pen, Pencil, Paper - Draw! This immediately caught my interest and I caught myself nodding emphatically when reading Terry's first post. Yes, drawing is a technique learned by doing it and doing it every day (every day matters :-) ) even for a short time, helps a lot.
Tonight I will pick one of my shoes to draw. I usually draw my foot when waiting and not feeling comfortable trying to draw another person. The above sketch was made in May 2007 while waiting at the doctors - kind of an endless sketch of  a sketch of my foot in my sketchbook ...
This one I did with ink and waterbrush during a lunchbreak in our cafeteria, I think it is from some time last year. (Note to myself: put a date on your sketches!)

51 Photos - Flower(s)

What luck that there is this little "s" in a bracket! I really can not decide if I should pick the pomegranate (which actually is a tree, so does not really fit this theme..).
 I know - a red rose!
 Or a pink one?
I know: a peony!

Another Life Drawing Class

Two weeks after my life drawing class at Kunsthistorisches Museum I attended another two day class on life drawing in Graz. "Dynamic life drawing" is a much looser way to deal with the figure.
Colour and line to form the body - quilte a challenge for me!

I tried the "molding"technique with pan pastels, but I needed the lines to give my figure any definition at all.

In the end I returned to line and shadow - again a class I would love to take again!

51 Photos - Opposites

Vienna offers a wide range of opposites: modern and old architecture is just one of them.

Life Drawing

Some weeks ago I had the chance to attend a life drawing class at Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. This two day class resulted in a large number of sketches, I'll only show a few off .

We had a model available nearly the whole time and also got a lot of chance to practice some basic drawing techniques.

From line drawings to dipping all our fingers into loose graphit powder and "mold" the figure onto the paper to shading we tried everything.

White chalk helped to get highlights and stronger shadows brought out the plasticity of the figure.
I wish such a class would be more often!

51 Photos - daily use

Oh, too many ideas! As I am just struggling with readjusting to needing stronger glasses, these are definitly in "daily use".

51 Photos - Black and White

Seeing Neo, my friends black and white Cat sleeping on the table was the instant inspiration for this weeks theme!
He is very aware of his beauty and importance!

51 Photos - Red again!

Finally! I tried accessing my blog with my laptop and here I can upload photos- Yeah!!
This was my first idea, but as I checked the other contributions before publishing mine - which I usually do not do - I liked Karin's photo so much more and decided to find something else. When I went to pick up my car from changing to summer wheels I noticed something else red, which dominates our life:
I love the reflection (and I love that I can finally blog again! I was ready to switch to another programm!)
